Terms of use
These terms are the deal between you and us when you use FinMaxxing. We've kept them as plain as we can. Please read them, especially the part about FinMaxxing being education, not advice.
1. Who we are and these terms
FinMaxxing is a free, non-commercial app provided by Gregor Maxwell ("we", "us"), an individual based in England, UK. Contact: hello@maxwellpartners.co.uk.
By downloading or using FinMaxxing, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy, which explains how FinMaxxing handles data. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
2. Education, not financial advice
FinMaxxing teaches how money works. It's education, not financial advice, and it never tells you what to do with your own money.
- Nothing in the app is a recommendation to buy, sell or use any product, provider or investment, or to take any course of action.
- Examples use made-up people and round numbers. They're illustrations, not suggestions.
- Tax rates, allowances and rules change, often every year, and depend on your own circumstances and where in the UK you live. Figures in the app can go out of date.
- Investments can go down as well as up, and you may get back less than you put in.
- We're not authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority to give financial advice, and FinMaxxing isn't regulated financial advice.
For help with your own situation, use the free services below or a regulated financial adviser:
- MoneyHelper: free, impartial money guidance, backed by the government.
- Pension Wise: free guidance about your pension options from age 50.
- FCA Register: check a firm or adviser is authorised before you use them.
FinMaxxing covers topics found in CII, CISI, LIBF, ICAEW (ACA), CIMA and ACIBS syllabuses. FinMaxxing is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of these bodies. It isn't exam preparation and doesn't count towards any qualification.
3. Age and your progress
- You must be 16 or over to use FinMaxxing.
- Please give your real year of birth. The app uses it to check your age and to show extra support to people who might be under 18. It stays on your phone.
- There's no account or sign-in. Your progress is saved only on your phone. We don't back it up and can't see it, so we can't restore it or move it to another phone.
- If you erase your progress, delete the app or lose your phone, your progress is gone. You can keep a copy with Settings → Export my progress, but it can't be loaded back into the app.
- FinMaxxing works without an internet connection. Links to websites open in your browser and need a connection.
4. It's free
- FinMaxxing is free. Every lesson is open to everyone.
- There are no ads and no in-app purchases, and nothing in the app asks you to pay.
- Streak freezes, XP and achievements can't be bought, and have no money value.
- Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer.
5. Your licence to use the app
We give you a personal, non-transferable right to use FinMaxxing on Apple devices you own or control. The licence is Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the "Standard EULA"). These terms add to it. If the two conflict, these terms apply, except where Apple's rules say the Standard EULA must win.
Apple isn't responsible for FinMaxxing or its content, and has no duty to provide support for it.
6. Using FinMaxxing fairly
Please don't:
- copy, sell, publish or share our lessons, questions or artwork outside the app, or use them to train AI models;
- try to get round the age check;
- try to break or reverse-engineer the app;
- use automated tools to scrape the app;
- use the app for anything illegal.
7. Lessons and accuracy
Every lesson is drafted from public sources, such as GOV.UK, HMRC, the FCA and MoneyHelper, and checked by a person before it's published. Each lesson lists its sources. Even so, mistakes can happen and rules change. If you spot something wrong, please tell us on the support page.
Lessons are built into the app. New and updated lessons arrive with app updates. We may add, update or remove lessons and features.
8. Who owns what
The FinMaxxing name, the app, its lessons, questions, Quid the mascot and other artwork belong to us or the people who license them to us. Your progress belongs to you: you can export it or erase it at any time.
9. Stopping using FinMaxxing
- You can stop using FinMaxxing at any time. Settings → Erase my progress clears everything the app stored on your phone and turns off the reminder. Deleting the app also removes it. Neither can be undone.
- We may stop offering FinMaxxing, or remove it from the App Store. A copy already on your phone may keep working, but it won't get new lessons or updates.
10. Our responsibility to you
- We provide FinMaxxing with reasonable care and skill, and as described in the App Store listing.
- Your progress is stored only on your phone, and we don't back it up. We're not responsible for progress lost when a phone is lost, reset or replaced, or when the app is erased or deleted.
- FinMaxxing is for education. We're not responsible for decisions you make about your own money, or any loss that comes from them. That's why we point you to free guidance and regulated advisers for your own situation.
- We're not responsible for loss we couldn't reasonably have foreseen, for business losses, or for problems caused by things outside our control, such as problems with your phone or Apple's services.
- If we are responsible for a loss, our total liability is limited to £100.
- Nothing in these terms limits our liability where the law doesn't allow it, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or under your consumer rights.
11. Changes
We may update these terms, for example when the app or the law changes. We'll update the date at the top. If a change is important, we'll tell you in the app, through an app update, before it takes effect. If you don't agree, you can stop using the app and delete it.
12. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your local courts, and you keep the consumer protections of the law where you live.
If something's gone wrong, please contact us first. We'll do our best to sort it out.
